This is my 5th, I believe. This was an excellent way to use up a bunch of ends of worsted weight yarn. Knitting it is a breeze while watching TV as it's all garter stitch. It's primary benefit was reducing the pile of random balls of worsted weight yarn in my stash.<div><br /></div><div>I deviate a bit from the pattern (free on Ravelry). Here's how I do it. **At the beginning of each colour I leave a 6" tail, knit into the front and back of the first stitch, and knit across the row, then turn. With yarn in front (wyif) I slip the first stitch, move yarn to the back and knit into the front and back (kfb) of the second stitch, then knit across the row. Leaving a 6" tail I tie the two yarns together and pick up the next colour. then repeat from **. </div><div><br /></div><div>Once the blanket is at the desired width, Knit a second triangle and graft the two triangles together. This creates a square blanket.</div><div><br /></div><div>If a rectangular blanket is desired, once the blanket is at the desired width, ^^start a new yarn (no more fringe), slip the first stitch wyif then move to the back and knit the next two stitches together , then knit across the row. So you are decreasing at the beginning of the right side. At the beginning of the return row, slip the first st wyif, then kfb into the second stitch and knit across the row. You will increase at the beginning of the wrong side. Cut the yarn, start another yarn and repeat from ^^. It's a good idea to work your ends in as you go so you don't have to do it after. The diagonal growth of the blanket is maintained. Continue this until the desired length of the blanket is reached. Then knit the second triangle and graft to the lengthened piece. When you graft the two together you won't see this yarn as it will be in the 'ditch' of the garter stitch.</div><div><br /></div><div>Another tip... to make the blanket nice and squishy go up a couple of needle sizes from the largest size on a ball band. In this case I used a 5mm needle. On the fingering weight/sock yarn blankets I used a 3mm needle. I also try to use a contrasting yarn on every subsequent row - usually light then dark then light then dark. I even used variegated yarn. I didn't worry about how it would turn out. Yarns from my late mother-in-law's stash were used as well as some DK yarns. </div><div><p></p></div></div>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-87161085012471251642024-03-14T12:06:00.014-04:002024-03-14T15:26:21.149-04:00A Day of Sloth<p>Yesterday was a PJ Day. I'd had an upset stomach in the middle of the night and slept late. I didn't have any errands to run so completely took it easy. Of course, I completed another puzzle.</p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnmRN6xnnjbUEQRfBwWvIj6swVPW_Mya4DWkaDUmVHjRcjpDihoU9dPNF0W2y3D9aTeF60D_lB07gInr87SoJIlvqo_u1fylrnGiCfs2TNJjRoW1MY7t2hpVDhe6cqOZV__UlmYQl9dY15kX5yRlWTuc_MKF9kK-21ri-BwPfBIsMuxjkFSZxCVPW7T224" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2455" data-original-width="3430" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnmRN6xnnjbUEQRfBwWvIj6swVPW_Mya4DWkaDUmVHjRcjpDihoU9dPNF0W2y3D9aTeF60D_lB07gInr87SoJIlvqo_u1fylrnGiCfs2TNJjRoW1MY7t2hpVDhe6cqOZV__UlmYQl9dY15kX5yRlWTuc_MKF9kK-21ri-BwPfBIsMuxjkFSZxCVPW7T224" width="570" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">It was very enjoyable because each cupcake was a little puzzle on its own. I sorted by colour as it came out of the box. One pile for edge pieces and other piles for each colour. There were only about 40 brown pieces (table top) to figure out at the end.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The previous couple of days I worked on a 1000 piece puzzle that I had purchased at Giant Tiger. It was of Cinque Terre in Italy but the picture on the box was only about 8" x 8" so it was really frustrating trying to match puzzle pieces with the microscopic photo. I completed the sky, then the water, then all the buildings. I gave up trying to do the green hillside and put it all away. I don't even think I'll donate it as it would frustrate anyone else as well. The 500 piece puzzle from the same company was much more manageable.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Then I cooked a delicious HelloFresh meal which we ate before I took any photos. I forget the actual title but it was roasted porkchops with a glaze of apricot and mustard on spring mix with clementines, radishes, seeds (pumpkin, sesame) and goat cheese with a vinaigrette dressing. I would definitely make this recipe again.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">After supper I did some work on the model I'm stitching for Pansy Patch Quilting and Stitchery. It's #6 in the Houses on Wisteria Lane series. I'll be doing #7 as soon as she finishes the design. They'll be released in June. Lori had exciting news when she dropped off the kit - she's going to be one of the featured designers at the Jingle Ball (a fun, festive, online stitching retreat) this December! We had a good chat about her Market experience near Nashville at the beginning of March.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have been doing quite a bit of fill-in on my Live on Little while watching TV at night. I got most of the water around the mermaid done.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizUVPUTpBLNIClYmR8NdCmKKdmUA-ljrOcfw1-iAmmroddYGYVcW4c5l2i5pq1zH4nl2PRZYqXoT6MZZTpYDQEheE16XRydVYCd-DYGoBNp5_oS0TmH1LF5ZAeT86pXPj7nZWagV1HIvKJtE8rfCKZONawOCl8cj1s6lceo5NxjL5MQk6YlscHCE_CouWX/s3949/IMG_8280.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2129" data-original-width="3949" height="365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizUVPUTpBLNIClYmR8NdCmKKdmUA-ljrOcfw1-iAmmroddYGYVcW4c5l2i5pq1zH4nl2PRZYqXoT6MZZTpYDQEheE16XRydVYCd-DYGoBNp5_oS0TmH1LF5ZAeT86pXPj7nZWagV1HIvKJtE8rfCKZONawOCl8cj1s6lceo5NxjL5MQk6YlscHCE_CouWX/w676-h365/IMG_8280.jpg" width="676" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">I got the basic vine of the border done down the left side.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEglLeGN75bM_YKkTOwJDr55fiF39F_v0dKvN7GY4RQcI8-meoJnb60mSpg4YOIUY-QLGwrQvzhqWrw8ICfrbPuZL3hLLkD-rIJYzMVHHKPTBpNbc7-6v6j7CczrWAOsE9LToKladnFuBeCRJiSX5LudTO6fhjyGB8KSut6ah_Hs717anHBKicWXbv4d4YPk" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3717" data-original-width="2866" height="712" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEglLeGN75bM_YKkTOwJDr55fiF39F_v0dKvN7GY4RQcI8-meoJnb60mSpg4YOIUY-QLGwrQvzhqWrw8ICfrbPuZL3hLLkD-rIJYzMVHHKPTBpNbc7-6v6j7CczrWAOsE9LToKladnFuBeCRJiSX5LudTO6fhjyGB8KSut6ah_Hs717anHBKicWXbv4d4YPk=w549-h712" width="549" /></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">There's still the big sailboat and all the water around it to do in that big open space on the lower left (above the mermaid and whales). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9a3RD5J7oogzxxJct20c-tX8a43HMWUrbaCWXnsbpMu4Eyh8laeHA6rKwkmXHpKXyMVeSMh5IWpinTYOImU2DEVZVZlB3zU1rdNT5vItn4d9_6HA5pxBomSjSF71IUd46Q-8K4s64TC0TOdarOGID5yoYg6CJwGaDTVNGrfH3Iy3V7CUyLUhY-w9AJMee/s3143/IMG_8279.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2053" data-original-width="3143" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9a3RD5J7oogzxxJct20c-tX8a43HMWUrbaCWXnsbpMu4Eyh8laeHA6rKwkmXHpKXyMVeSMh5IWpinTYOImU2DEVZVZlB3zU1rdNT5vItn4d9_6HA5pxBomSjSF71IUd46Q-8K4s64TC0TOdarOGID5yoYg6CJwGaDTVNGrfH3Iy3V7CUyLUhY-w9AJMee/w628-h410/IMG_8279.jpg" width="628" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">Today I got out of sloth mode and did some overdue housework. I was easily able to match motifs to their mirror images. When I sorted, I, of course, pulled out the edge pieces, then isolated any with the small parallelograms, and colours with colours. I also liked that the skinny tabs were up and down and the wide tabs were on the sides. It really helped with orientation of the pieces.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Now being totally obsessed, I found a sale at Giant Tiger from a Facebook ad (those algorithms are eerie) and beetled over there and found a puzzle that looked fun for $5. It was only 500 pieces.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiZZvsF2BxJrXg_vDsYbe7A1ctsC4CFRvdqtcm-PuaT9S1lArTtRxuaXvaOJH0PwNxpB3QKn4RM7D55XBpSEuXaFDKRQ4JNvkgEfFxMeC-ejWH3_H1tqCJ5RijaVFSDW_mnQGJnJ2a-WVR9xDZggkT4DMF_bKSxSZ7AVYAIkTokaYuoK1W3nepSEChN9uYd" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3672" data-original-width="4896" height="503" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiZZvsF2BxJrXg_vDsYbe7A1ctsC4CFRvdqtcm-PuaT9S1lArTtRxuaXvaOJH0PwNxpB3QKn4RM7D55XBpSEuXaFDKRQ4JNvkgEfFxMeC-ejWH3_H1tqCJ5RijaVFSDW_mnQGJnJ2a-WVR9xDZggkT4DMF_bKSxSZ7AVYAIkTokaYuoK1W3nepSEChN9uYd=w670-h503" width="670" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">It was like solving 15 small puzzles with the doors being quite distinctive. When I sorted, I made a pile of yellow pieces, and another pile of green pieces. Then started solving individual doors after assembling most of the border. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">At the one Giant Tiger, I didn't see a 1000 piece puzzle that I liked so my excursion today will be to head to another one and see what they have.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I am so hooked! I think the satisfying thing about puzzles is the feeling of accomplishment in a micro sense - finding the exact spot for each individual piece. I also like the 'snap' of the pieces going into place. The door puzzle pieces weren't as thick as the previous ones, but they held together quite well once put together.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have abandoned the crochet checkerboard blanket for now. I may rip it out and just do rows of double crochet just to use up more my stash. As crocheting really eats up yarn, I feared having to purchase more yarn (defeating the purpose of stash busting) to maintain the checkerboards. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Last night I worked on the sampler while watching the Bob Marley documentary with Skip. I got the mermaid stitched except for her eyes plus a couple of fish. I can now fill in the ocean around her.</div><div style="text-align: center;"> <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbuyra_zXZiKxswp_mY0teY32MqvGlafH5_jdOs6bxHuHaDG0A1VtNLvJyXe5_kE1saCop3LaY1yLrYutLsoDIDm9zHPbnX7C0XS2Ctn7jb0hyrU4dCUJYVNojgxAnLGLBRYyVGgOODkJ5jW9pCXLIWTctdvaxWR4sII6Q9cLB0BD0nEBf_oq9051902U2" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1879" data-original-width="4866" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbuyra_zXZiKxswp_mY0teY32MqvGlafH5_jdOs6bxHuHaDG0A1VtNLvJyXe5_kE1saCop3LaY1yLrYutLsoDIDm9zHPbnX7C0XS2Ctn7jb0hyrU4dCUJYVNojgxAnLGLBRYyVGgOODkJ5jW9pCXLIWTctdvaxWR4sII6Q9cLB0BD0nEBf_oq9051902U2=w604-h234" width="604" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Next time I'm able to concentrate on counting, I'll complete the vine/floral border on the left.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgcoaFdfTiX8jTfubq_C44Lmubg3F5OeiaEgfgmf8Oxn8Or5_1m04K8mghJETRmyp5aOlFpp0WvffGryhFuInsleACDI80IQB4RQB5yVPbg98gsrDODpZZ-BljkqWwP1s4mekoeCQMKftqekcLcY_0qLnautCh8lRefDQqJfBFMRSGop80_PTwUfNl3YdzY" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3091" data-original-width="4528" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgcoaFdfTiX8jTfubq_C44Lmubg3F5OeiaEgfgmf8Oxn8Or5_1m04K8mghJETRmyp5aOlFpp0WvffGryhFuInsleACDI80IQB4RQB5yVPbg98gsrDODpZZ-BljkqWwP1s4mekoeCQMKftqekcLcY_0qLnautCh8lRefDQqJfBFMRSGop80_PTwUfNl3YdzY=w627-h427" width="627" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Decisions still need to be made about what colour to do the whale's tummies and blowholes as well as selecting the mortar colour for the house. I guess I could outline the flag as it would be good for mindless filling in during social stitching.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The weather has been awesome. Our snow removal folks asked if I still needed them this month and I decided I could probably handle things on my own. I thanked them very much for their good work. They did only have to come 3 times but the peace of mind was worth the megabucks we shelled out. I also asked them to put us on the list for next winter. I was surprised at their response to my comments saying they'd cover our snow clearing this month if we gave them a 5-star review on Google. I had no problem doing that so we are covered this month if we do get any snow over 5cm.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Other than puzzling and stitching I haven't done much. Housework always is there for me to do. I have, however, continued with my Hello Fresh subscription. I am getting spoiled now and really don't feel like planning, shopping for, and cooking any suppers. We do have lots of bits of leftovers in the freezer so tonight will be an attempt at clearing out some of that stuff.</div></div></div><p></p>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-6760928482167321382024-03-01T16:17:00.008-05:002024-03-01T17:11:27.064-05:00I Changed My Mind<p>I was going to crochet the checkerboard blanket in strips then sew the strips together but Jennifer at my Tuesday evening craft group mentioned she hated to sew in ends. I'm not a big fan of that either. I then recalled watching a video on attaching along the side as you crochet and decided I would pursue that option.</p><p>My technique varies from the video because I don't mind a gap between squares. </p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjedTMSYopeImGG26x9EyF5H1cAQyRztlgnGZfwtlrqH3TUQPvkA5QPhDTTrDBQGExqAlLnzrIAZ26K3vAeYTGPCM2w-JL0Qe0FnjZs2FcmFdasPZpyS8ikbvHIa0AZigqBseFNvgyfa0VtlbOoIx57lLHtExiTKsBgymIxBA1I7-i5CrfzoRsEoOUM2VvX" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4754" data-original-width="2005" height="958" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjedTMSYopeImGG26x9EyF5H1cAQyRztlgnGZfwtlrqH3TUQPvkA5QPhDTTrDBQGExqAlLnzrIAZ26K3vAeYTGPCM2w-JL0Qe0FnjZs2FcmFdasPZpyS8ikbvHIa0AZigqBseFNvgyfa0VtlbOoIx57lLHtExiTKsBgymIxBA1I7-i5CrfzoRsEoOUM2VvX=w403-h958" width="403" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Basically I attach the bottom of each row to the bottom of the corresponding row with a single crochet. Then I chain two and attach to the top of the adjacent row with a single crochet and then crochet the row. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing but I won't have a lot of ends to weave in as I do them as I go.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">At stitching on Monday morning, I cleverly left my threads at home except for the dark blue. So I spent the time finishing the blue waves and started to outline the rest of the 'ocean'.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiitwqbOQ-op0pCiO3Ufnd7k6hQRRTL2CqK_mooOai9t9h432O0_H2X71I1RkVkVbhLoVZo0ffWgKoAe5Y9E_oP1Aruk58PeZd0QUV8KmbzItgA6VBogm4poY20fehTTavuh8wcAqFNYGClJkwbH5M-igwMu1-4dXtjTtxhts2GY7_i2IW2rhrk9uKRPq2m" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2470" data-original-width="3557" height="463" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiitwqbOQ-op0pCiO3Ufnd7k6hQRRTL2CqK_mooOai9t9h432O0_H2X71I1RkVkVbhLoVZo0ffWgKoAe5Y9E_oP1Aruk58PeZd0QUV8KmbzItgA6VBogm4poY20fehTTavuh8wcAqFNYGClJkwbH5M-igwMu1-4dXtjTtxhts2GY7_i2IW2rhrk9uKRPq2m=w667-h463" width="667" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">I haven't touched it since then. However, this arrived in the mail the other day.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgroY8i4XfM_x2AmYrxPrgHKsauQFn5-bIq6KShZymzmSvlC4RnF6kKw88q6NCtR6Fbr0kAmmenC6mXZSbeCQwShifwr7LG-Q8JAvFkysUED-ImIIUTiiPvGN_xyKZ9Pwavh77ywNgYy0MqeQCqOekQyR_m-25xHucH_zd74Tcx3rJ-tfT9Raq_Iwa_gzGt" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3347" data-original-width="2713" height="565" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgroY8i4XfM_x2AmYrxPrgHKsauQFn5-bIq6KShZymzmSvlC4RnF6kKw88q6NCtR6Fbr0kAmmenC6mXZSbeCQwShifwr7LG-Q8JAvFkysUED-ImIIUTiiPvGN_xyKZ9Pwavh77ywNgYy0MqeQCqOekQyR_m-25xHucH_zd74Tcx3rJ-tfT9Raq_Iwa_gzGt=w460-h565" width="460" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">I got it from a Facebook cross stitch destash group for a very good price. However, the shipping was almost three times what I paid for the chart. So annoyed. I would have been OK with just having it sent in a manila envelope because postage rates with tracking from the US is costly. Next time, I'll tell the sender to find a less expensive method.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I haven't decided how I will do it. Ideally a light, medium, and dark fabric would work. Perhaps a white, medium blue and a navy? I'll take it to the guild's free stitching day tomorrow and see what other folks suggest. I also may or may not use buttons either.</div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have become obsessed with doing jigsaw puzzles. I only did a couple during COVID and somehow didn't get hooked then. Many of my friends were doing them and swapping them but I wasn't that interested - probably because I didn't have a good setup for them in front of the TV in the family room.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I don't even remember what got me interested in doing one last week but I tried a 500 piece puzzle I already had. That went well. I started another one but the pieces were so thin they didn't interlock very well so I abandoned it. I ordered a couple of Springbok puzzles from Amazon and finished them in fairly short order. I also bought one at Value Village for a tenth of what Amazon charged me but once it was assembled, it was missing three pieces. Oh well. I enjoyed the process. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I then decided to try for a 1000 piece puzzle and had one in my stash. I rolled out my yoga mat on the dining room table and spread everything out on that. If I needed to put it away before it was finished I could just roll it up in my yoga mat for safe keeping.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I started it yesterday and finished it a little while ago.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhSDQR9NNJ-StDen_lRWOeSQ0a3ogIztwRTe5VS75IQUU0Nmcff4P9P33a0Ic5cC0Bv3oGC7T0vvRfh_Cxm-g0YFIZwMKKLdQu8zDkLWI8k5coILU8CuSKSVMY9yy7fUG3h-zZl3llpeaM0BRzJgYxYiEzQU7SylDVTE1aCRidJ-GvHjHx02mju3simaZgf" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3238" data-original-width="4749" height="441" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhSDQR9NNJ-StDen_lRWOeSQ0a3ogIztwRTe5VS75IQUU0Nmcff4P9P33a0Ic5cC0Bv3oGC7T0vvRfh_Cxm-g0YFIZwMKKLdQu8zDkLWI8k5coILU8CuSKSVMY9yy7fUG3h-zZl3llpeaM0BRzJgYxYiEzQU7SylDVTE1aCRidJ-GvHjHx02mju3simaZgf=w647-h441" width="647" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Although it had a lot of pieces, there were a lot of motifs which made sorting and grouping much easier. There was even one piece left over which must have been from another puzzle. Oh well.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Also this week I had another delivery from HelloFresh. This was the crusted chicken with mashed sweet potatoes and sautéed snap peas. Yum-mo!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbKD1CUYoYxnAYA8Ts0r70OYjt--6Ef19IV8q8WbDZ1wCAuPnFZ0tBSGI1x7xdLnKIe2oz4UfOXVK36BDoJcsId72BwtiJwK8amEDoUWyN8JxAgp_defdTaW5FPFyUU9mjQ1r8-6R22vLxavwQ-XigB8PzpQIRJ6QPAWPaxiP-MixR5gi8SDJxDrPVpEi0" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3632" data-original-width="3689" height="559" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbKD1CUYoYxnAYA8Ts0r70OYjt--6Ef19IV8q8WbDZ1wCAuPnFZ0tBSGI1x7xdLnKIe2oz4UfOXVK36BDoJcsId72BwtiJwK8amEDoUWyN8JxAgp_defdTaW5FPFyUU9mjQ1r8-6R22vLxavwQ-XigB8PzpQIRJ6QPAWPaxiP-MixR5gi8SDJxDrPVpEi0=w568-h559" width="568" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">It was very easy and I will easily be able to replicate it for another meal. I like that the meals are easy to prepare, the ingredients provided are very fresh. the instructions are very clear (if I can learn to read and follow them properly) and include photos, the portions are generous, and I don't have to think what to eat on those nights I prepare one. Sometimes there is more than enough for Skip and I to eat so we get leftovers - yay!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">One perplexing thing that occurred today was a change in how I load photos into this blog. The change must have occurred when I recently updated my laptop. Before, I could easily add photos to the text by clicking the icon on the task bar. It won't work now. Instead, I have to go to my photo files and copy and paste the photo into the body of the text. I sure hope Blogger continues to be available for me to use and doesn't disappear. I realize there are other platforms but having used Blogger for this blog for almost 18 years, I'm very familiar with its features. I'm having a similar problem with adding photos in Gmail as well - grrrr.</div></div></div></div><p></p>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-33692433404773469502024-02-27T16:52:00.008-05:002024-02-28T12:00:26.249-05:00Enjoying Fabulous February Weather<p>This has been the best winter to get stuck in the north. We've had record-breaking temperatures - into the teens! </p><p>Yesterday Skip and I ventured down Hall's Road to see what we could see. Chickadees were out and I saw a red-bellied woodpecker. The red squirrel was not afraid of us at all. It knows we humans leave food for them.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNHOFTEgN34OjmtssZldYuH415ayNdQISRVf5uj6k5-rbwAtz8w224brVFL6shykTkLYgiZaHrbSGtuCfC19ullxer5kj9fxE3KpDA3azbKyIr_-1bTjeiV4Prh7KB3fWf57nHeIUt3-JYw9yUDcWCczfnn58RQCgUAX-tCg-P-S_BrzEcJzOhEf_nKFdc/s2962/IMG_8234.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2962" data-original-width="2541" height="617" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNHOFTEgN34OjmtssZldYuH415ayNdQISRVf5uj6k5-rbwAtz8w224brVFL6shykTkLYgiZaHrbSGtuCfC19ullxer5kj9fxE3KpDA3azbKyIr_-1bTjeiV4Prh7KB3fWf57nHeIUt3-JYw9yUDcWCczfnn58RQCgUAX-tCg-P-S_BrzEcJzOhEf_nKFdc/w530-h617/IMG_8234.jpg" width="530" /></a></div>A little while later we saw one at another feeder. I'm doing six, 8 block strips and will sew the sides together to create a checkerboard pattern. Crocheting should use up a lot of my remaining acrylic worsted yarn.<p></p><div>This week was the Trillium Embroidery Guild meeting for February. Highlights are outlined <a href="https://trilliumguild.blogspot.com/2024/02/february-2024.html">here</a>. It was the kickoff to the Round Robin with 11 participants, and Marilyn's introduction to wool felt appliqué. I've been beavering away on my Live on Little, especially on the filling in of large areas. In preparation for Sunday, I'm doing some of the counted bits so I won't need to count when I'm visiting with my stitcherly friends and just do filling in.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdsX9ao-uHp_MYWzk5s4phtT-F4mjR4tlHqtcexQGHNoZNH0kI86Oee-D3ZNlTNOx0QQ7IHquBsQRWDLnd4G_nAvXOamxBRs5X5MPJAnrdvgrlZjw5I1w-OsBBTvRoO3CHudbx7QWTac7uocYPWc50D8qMLIwI4zUQQb_9PY0A_nmpc1wwdeO3VQhAcur7/s3837/P1170954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2655" data-original-width="3837" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdsX9ao-uHp_MYWzk5s4phtT-F4mjR4tlHqtcexQGHNoZNH0kI86Oee-D3ZNlTNOx0QQ7IHquBsQRWDLnd4G_nAvXOamxBRs5X5MPJAnrdvgrlZjw5I1w-OsBBTvRoO3CHudbx7QWTac7uocYPWc50D8qMLIwI4zUQQb_9PY0A_nmpc1wwdeO3VQhAcur7/w632-h436/P1170954.JPG" width="632" /></a></div>I'm almost done the waves below the house - only a couple more 'til I reach the left border. Then I can fill in all the 'beach' above the waves. <div><br /></div><div>I was very eager to start the lobster and the fish. Yesterday was our first snowfall in weeks and we only got about 5cm of snow. The snowplow came through mid-afternoon. By the time I went to bed, our snow clearing service had come and gone. One group spent the entire day on Barbara Kershaw's Schwalm piece. I'm sure they were exhausted after all the intensive work.</p><p>I took several projects but really was motivated to get lot done on my Live on Little piece. The light is so good in that room I didn't even need my lamp.</p><p style="text-align: left;">I had done a lot of the green of the border the previous couple of days but finished the flowers for what border had been completed, then did a lot on the grass at the bottom, and the first word in the saying. The rest of the weekend I finished some of the windows and started the doors. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNG0fuLAcgbOPcLypdt92JmwxyEkdVxQy9JyNjTDWv8B90Q6T_pKsTG3ojT8ZKd85-WnGPWuawuXiiAm8ufRhyQ9Bga76_YMWa7gWhnlGa5wQ0WqoFC0rx-bQm2bPlE-z19AY9bBSSXj0GSqPy7n_laximk4E8C2D-DcfNsQ3kMOardv-qM8gakkYPtKq/s4472/P1170937.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2678" data-original-width="4472" height="394" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQNG0fuLAcgbOPcLypdt92JmwxyEkdVxQy9JyNjTDWv8B90Q6T_pKsTG3ojT8ZKd85-WnGPWuawuXiiAm8ufRhyQ9Bga76_YMWa7gWhnlGa5wQ0WqoFC0rx-bQm2bPlE-z19AY9bBSSXj0GSqPy7n_laximk4E8C2D-DcfNsQ3kMOardv-qM8gakkYPtKq/w657-h394/P1170937.JPG" width="657" /></a></div>I had planned to fill in the windows at stitching today but started in on the water below the grass instead. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKYc3pt2yROWCfOzbnfMdKkLihG-wAE3Qi8RuMBdGi4hHuqK4MnktfdmCiHQtlXJDYC3_q5hs3gpeuJ0B0L6mbOqiajeUtszHA20uXL52NtLkdVN2wKj9t6AkV9luAvITS7bWAgAowN_G36FmiEf6MLogLNb8gTkd6jcBo3y8FsaoHRuK_1r__oTpeghZn/s3356/P1170942.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2288" data-original-width="3356" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKYc3pt2yROWCfOzbnfMdKkLihG-wAE3Qi8RuMBdGi4hHuqK4MnktfdmCiHQtlXJDYC3_q5hs3gpeuJ0B0L6mbOqiajeUtszHA20uXL52NtLkdVN2wKj9t6AkV9luAvITS7bWAgAowN_G36FmiEf6MLogLNb8gTkd6jcBo3y8FsaoHRuK_1r__oTpeghZn/w663-h452/P1170942.JPG" width="663" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">I'm really close to being able to start some of the nautical motifs at the bottom.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">In the evenings when I'm watching TV with Skip or when my eyes are too tired to stitch, I keep working on my scrap blanket. Once I have this part as long as I want it, I'll start another fringed triangle which, when finished, will get grafted onto this piece. I don't have a long enough circular needle so the stitches are bunched up. This Aero circular needle has a very annoying, stiff, loopy cable. I may switch to an interchangeable circular needle with a longer cable. The only issue with that is if there is any 'catch' when pushing stitches back onto the needle after turning the work over to knit on the return row. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This will be a somewhat busy week. Skip is having a tooth extracted tomorrow and I have a dental cleaning on Wednesday. Skip is going out for dinner with a couple of friends on Wednesday night and the two of us are meeting friends for breakfast on Friday morning. In between bursts of activity we are being very lazy and doing a lot of napping. </div></div>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-1609913111461558702024-02-02T12:37:00.004-05:002024-02-03T15:57:04.487-05:00Sampler House<p>A couple of weeks ago on a Thursday, I got a text from Lori at Pansy Patch Quilts & Stitchery asking if I could stitch a model for her with a quick turnaround. It wasn't a very big piece, I had a stitching day planned for that weekend, and was free a couple of other days around it so I agreed to do it.</p><p>We met at a location equidistant between our homes the next day. I stitched that evening after supper, most of the next day, Sunday at my stitching day, and finished it up on Monday evening. Lori and I met again the following Saturday for the handoff.</p><p>She fashioned it into a pillow as are the others in the series. It has just been revealed to the public and will be released the first weekend in March at the <a href="https://needleworkretailer.com/nashville/">2024 Needlework trade show in Nashville TN</a>. Today she posted the finished item in Instagram.</p><p>Sampler House from the series, Houses on Wisteria Lane.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOzfhez4l6Tg9WYhf6Wt0sFRdy21hfzzvUvy8ZuNfowRGmABZ-QH3bV2mkqpkU-45G6BdZ9XBHj4qA2Xu4uNEHYc2TfbUCQ2RUQiucKDEW5j9kxfHXwGObc-vDUK4AcfypkhyBABH73cqzTIPaQIW4DIDe7IdV4B9kbrmFKzNIGAEFgBAW_l_kFE3xwQo/s502/Fullscreen%20capture%202024-02-02%20122518%20PM.bmp.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="469" data-original-width="502" height="574" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOzfhez4l6Tg9WYhf6Wt0sFRdy21hfzzvUvy8ZuNfowRGmABZ-QH3bV2mkqpkU-45G6BdZ9XBHj4qA2Xu4uNEHYc2TfbUCQ2RUQiucKDEW5j9kxfHXwGObc-vDUK4AcfypkhyBABH73cqzTIPaQIW4DIDe7IdV4B9kbrmFKzNIGAEFgBAW_l_kFE3xwQo/w615-h574/Fullscreen%20capture%202024-02-02%20122518%20PM.bmp.jpg" width="615" /></a></p><p>Lori is, first and foremost, a quilter so a distinctive feature of her cross stitch patterns is an iconic quilt block - often on the door. She got all the stitching done but when it came to doing the backstitching, she found it quite daunting. There are several different colours of backstitching - greens and blues - all those different coloured lines!!!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6CBd5nt8JMJDcQQj2DLs8a5SoorDvLgwZCqsXUHByzPBCzx7JlDQN0V6O1h-sJDtQ-kK59mx2CBRAZHjDRrlAHHF_PQq2ogI-h-fe9PcciWkNxhrtCTxMJZhguNzVw7akxR_uVJQEmad7amojfX0E4GwPVj0FvHYFhevJ-utrc8Mhk-UQxDVTiSDVLJEL/s4896/P1170932.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3672" data-original-width="4896" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6CBd5nt8JMJDcQQj2DLs8a5SoorDvLgwZCqsXUHByzPBCzx7JlDQN0V6O1h-sJDtQ-kK59mx2CBRAZHjDRrlAHHF_PQq2ogI-h-fe9PcciWkNxhrtCTxMJZhguNzVw7akxR_uVJQEmad7amojfX0E4GwPVj0FvHYFhevJ-utrc8Mhk-UQxDVTiSDVLJEL/w642-h482/P1170932.JPG" width="642" /></a></p>Alda was struggling so I offered to do the backstitching for her. There are about a dozen different coloured lines on the chart. One of the blue lines is dotted. There are also dark pink, red, and fuchia lines. Some of the lines disappear between vertical or horizontal stitches but I think the overall effect was successful. Backstitching just makes the stitches 'pop' and defines the hydrangea petals.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRph8MnPc2e6E5qCFr8zwB2Qhk0O7bllwSSy4HYTZf-OO5NBcitX1bwqapTs2XFKGeaSRkrbhPgrlNBE1hkkPFgc_FUbSNa6dPhbrbx9-Tf0Esq7CwbxiXgPJG3cTDs8Hs1kWkgic0R7vqJFC0fT1JJJo5elp-zZNm4jWfGo7EVtAiiEy-vCJOoFUXmT7D/s4896/P1170931.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3672" data-original-width="4896" height="491" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRph8MnPc2e6E5qCFr8zwB2Qhk0O7bllwSSy4HYTZf-OO5NBcitX1bwqapTs2XFKGeaSRkrbhPgrlNBE1hkkPFgc_FUbSNa6dPhbrbx9-Tf0Esq7CwbxiXgPJG3cTDs8Hs1kWkgic0R7vqJFC0fT1JJJo5elp-zZNm4jWfGo7EVtAiiEy-vCJOoFUXmT7D/w655-h491/P1170931.JPG" width="655" /></a></div>I did the French knots, too, as they were good landmarks for many of the backstitch lines.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiamQn9ezoaC_SyfolgkyABKubjv6Nv2ISkYoADZ80Z_wqkeCV2SbGvjhrM-DDB4Yv6CEtwjrpXZu5Xpp6vOlbYYK0sNJrw4ZhY3Md9Yth3cjlShf92rQW1ekEkM0rI9xnOY9F0DjAPc1Q6nMIGKThr7x2RFKT0H1U1h0nKIbRXHzz06WvaWOb5hR8G1eSr/s4896/P1170930.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3672" data-original-width="4896" height="507" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiamQn9ezoaC_SyfolgkyABKubjv6Nv2ISkYoADZ80Z_wqkeCV2SbGvjhrM-DDB4Yv6CEtwjrpXZu5Xpp6vOlbYYK0sNJrw4ZhY3Md9Yth3cjlShf92rQW1ekEkM0rI9xnOY9F0DjAPc1Q6nMIGKThr7x2RFKT0H1U1h0nKIbRXHzz06WvaWOb5hR8G1eSr/w676-h507/P1170930.JPG" width="676" /></a></div>I think I'm finished but will have another look before I return it to Alda.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTq3x3ZxkJqP-GkV2o0snxjNqC-p4AYjpNcwPbdXFulqUGUM7qyikBmp7tSmxXMm8rtn5k9zc0OyoaSVeWgFoyY1DDvC75-c5K9Yg7CUw9CCPPn188Kaep6ieB0yFR9L-ItPDwo8Qd8Bz2R0un-hSnjPlPajui-IwN5NDKj9pBmAARjygN7zCOHywCkDm5/s4196/P1170929.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4196" data-original-width="2760" height="955" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTq3x3ZxkJqP-GkV2o0snxjNqC-p4AYjpNcwPbdXFulqUGUM7qyikBmp7tSmxXMm8rtn5k9zc0OyoaSVeWgFoyY1DDvC75-c5K9Yg7CUw9CCPPn188Kaep6ieB0yFR9L-ItPDwo8Qd8Bz2R0un-hSnjPlPajui-IwN5NDKj9pBmAARjygN7zCOHywCkDm5/w627-h955/P1170929.JPG" width="627" /></a></div>Any stitching I did last week was on the backstitching on this piece. One has to be very precise. When you're stitching your own stuff, sometimes being out a stitch here or there isn't that big a deal. But when you're stitching for a designer, your work is usually what is photographed for the cover of the piece which sells the pattern unless there's a sample made up.</div><div><br /></div><div>Model stitchers also give feedback on the colour selection and if there are any errors in the charting. On one of Teresa Kogut's new releases, she decided the birds' wings needed to provide more of a contrast than the original I stitched for her.</div><div><br /></div><div>My original:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrbCy1_k_Tx2z4bgbDURclPdLz5N3q-FKwnbeGD70r7Mrye7BVSclwitDLPyUjxg-mHG0sPly4Wy9b3kc9dvXnSSEygxOhLfrhTtnxRAt-ykavnjohM7n76U-3yobV744LwnYf8_uy94am5sjFF90uO4EBnnuLlXX4nHrpcDKnZrQVyDDqB5ISXUsi-u1/s3365/P1130795.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3156" data-original-width="3365" height="492" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrbCy1_k_Tx2z4bgbDURclPdLz5N3q-FKwnbeGD70r7Mrye7BVSclwitDLPyUjxg-mHG0sPly4Wy9b3kc9dvXnSSEygxOhLfrhTtnxRAt-ykavnjohM7n76U-3yobV744LwnYf8_uy94am5sjFF90uO4EBnnuLlXX4nHrpcDKnZrQVyDDqB5ISXUsi-u1/w525-h492/P1130795.JPG" width="525" /></a></div>Her amended version. She picked out the white on the birds' wings and filled in with the red colour. She discusses this change <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5k0XFMnUjo&t=313s">here, starting at 5:00</a>. She also backstitched the white parts on the foxes so they would pop! Jennifer, Sharon, Poppy, Marilyn, Barb, and I decided it would be a stitchalong. Jen1 and Marilyn finished and framed theirs before the end of the year. I got the stitching done by the end of December. Barb is still working on hers. Sharon started hers recently and I'm not sure if Poppy has started hers yet.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">To recap, I changed the colour of the house from Conch to CCW Bella Rosa because I wanted it pinker. I also changed Toasted Marshmallow for the baskets and snow to CCW Khaki Mocha. The skeins of Toasted Marshmallow had too much tan colour for my liking. I added Cayenne to the male cardinal's wings to provide more of a contrast with his breast. For the female, I changed her body colour to Palomino. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Because the house colour was so close to the fabric colour, I outlined the house with CCS Woodrose backstitching. I added all our initials and moved the date from below the tree pyramid to the top right corner. Because of the initials, I moved the snowflakes to space them somewhat evenly around them. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I'm very happy with the colour of the frame. I ordered it from <a href="https://www.customframescanada.ca/">here</a> and it came in two weeks. I also ordered the glare free 'glass' which is actually plexiglass. I guess shipping glass could be a risk of breakage. I could have also ordered hanging hardware but I had some on hand that I was happy to use.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I had a surprise this morning when I checked Facebook. Teresa Kogut posted a sneak peek of one of the charts she is going to be releasing at Market the first weekend of March - 'Foxes have Dens'. It's party of a new Early American Folk Art series.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbe8SmenFrIBPm8uhf1UyL7pyUxD_e-0H_kIBHw7P-XuRE25a0BwRSaJcGdYFb_l1oWK76fRE_Zr3QrKacS8YflPuXYGiARrH8i__noEUB8Yw9Sj4S3VAlCIhfL4eFQ75PcmLTa4X-mZd8v2tv6DX-grCNjhWkq9y2wHyqG9UDXAszObVf0pDgN1Un4zT0/s843/422306357_18403645444001295_478234360162273289_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="843" data-original-width="843" height="608" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbe8SmenFrIBPm8uhf1UyL7pyUxD_e-0H_kIBHw7P-XuRE25a0BwRSaJcGdYFb_l1oWK76fRE_Zr3QrKacS8YflPuXYGiARrH8i__noEUB8Yw9Sj4S3VAlCIhfL4eFQ75PcmLTa4X-mZd8v2tv6DX-grCNjhWkq9y2wHyqG9UDXAszObVf0pDgN1Un4zT0/w608-h608/422306357_18403645444001295_478234360162273289_n.jpg" width="608" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I had totally forgotten about stitching this model for her last year. I cut a piece of the linen from a corner and held it to the back and stitched through it to provide new support for the compromised threads. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglrd5VRnSK_4wAVk6_3CeipTexXGM1rZA6wLuGZoP4yK5GZEm4LSETgbZYsP3vcu-q50T0pkYP-hr78HaPtdIESklX32dK8SJMxMAqzbM-xf22dyXmN1PRp1WqWNA5vkHO6h8GukhLR4q-_QYWLKVM4FSvYLmu4h2cCUySAvehVU9pvAsT4TwVlEZ6KCc1/s3828/P1160045.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2582" data-original-width="3828" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglrd5VRnSK_4wAVk6_3CeipTexXGM1rZA6wLuGZoP4yK5GZEm4LSETgbZYsP3vcu-q50T0pkYP-hr78HaPtdIESklX32dK8SJMxMAqzbM-xf22dyXmN1PRp1WqWNA5vkHO6h8GukhLR4q-_QYWLKVM4FSvYLmu4h2cCUySAvehVU9pvAsT4TwVlEZ6KCc1/w590-h398/P1160045.JPG" width="590" /></a></div>It seemed to work. I also used my SnagNabit to try and even out some of the threads that looked quite askew. It's not perfect but good enough for me. We have decided to make the second Sunday of the month a regular stitching day at one of our houses.</p><p>Poppy showed us the Japanese embroidery piece she had completed. It is stunning.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYQYnEj6ptEpKYwM-MNZ560LZ8TUdt52aIFRUmwYN9QkqykNZRXfRQV9MJGQNJ3C501n3DOs_YJYkEcIGd5PoEq2jhG2f7qnKMpwAndqQo8ETikUiw_bBkE-EgpKQiD7Wfrn0OCzsNLzGNsVgMilqGwLv2Hr2ECJydMl4a8qviORxbMHv8vxlwE5VhV7kG/s836/Poppy's%20japanese%20embroidery.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="836" data-original-width="591" height="884" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYQYnEj6ptEpKYwM-MNZ560LZ8TUdt52aIFRUmwYN9QkqykNZRXfRQV9MJGQNJ3C501n3DOs_YJYkEcIGd5PoEq2jhG2f7qnKMpwAndqQo8ETikUiw_bBkE-EgpKQiD7Wfrn0OCzsNLzGNsVgMilqGwLv2Hr2ECJydMl4a8qviORxbMHv8vxlwE5VhV7kG/w624-h884/Poppy's%20japanese%20embroidery.jpg" width="624" /></a></div>Marilyn took this shot of Jen1 as her mug matched her shawlette. It's one of a series of designs she'll be releasing at the 2024 <a href="https://needleworkretailer.com/nashville/">Nashville Needlework Market</a> (a trade show) the first weekend of March. I picked up the fabric, threads, and pattern from her on Friday afternoon and stitched most of Friday night and most of Saturday. Then again at our stitch day on Sunday, and at my Monday morning stitching group, finishing up on Monday night. I took a photo and caught a couple of things I had missed, then sent a photo to Lori for her to check out. She found some more omissions which I easily added. I'll be meeting her at a point equidistant from our respective homes on Saturday for the handoff.<div><br /></div><div>I haven't done a single stitch on my sampler 'mattress' since Friday but earlier last week I got all the outlines done for the various pieces. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5kd3bRX3xXKt_KTWR2Jo7ZWsQa9887CZ6CdSDvuofZdDB6oL4iale1TpuezBpdIcsYnt4kZU9_2zigjQ79u995YuwsPiyPLcE6jZZahzRydzvtHb9fPKS33KPxLJj8tSXLe8zYg6PNWHsg1NN-ZeJ_fOAJJifNpFELQ8im2C9gIOZJIU-sUZInUceyTI/s2834/P1160041.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2450" data-original-width="2834" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5kd3bRX3xXKt_KTWR2Jo7ZWsQa9887CZ6CdSDvuofZdDB6oL4iale1TpuezBpdIcsYnt4kZU9_2zigjQ79u995YuwsPiyPLcE6jZZahzRydzvtHb9fPKS33KPxLJj8tSXLe8zYg6PNWHsg1NN-ZeJ_fOAJJifNpFELQ8im2C9gIOZJIU-sUZInUceyTI/w550-h476/P1160041.JPG" width="550" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">I still don't know what I'll put on the bottom - my name? a pithy saying? just the date? How about "Live Simply, Love Much"?</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">I did some stitching on my Live on Little and finished the star. Our appointment this Friday will outline the next course of treatment. </span><span style="text-align: left;">We think he'll start more immune therapy next week.</span><span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-45169511572422193332024-01-11T16:53:00.004-05:002024-01-11T16:53:54.724-05:00Some Thoughts on the Latest Just Cross Stitch Magazine and Digital Technology in General<p style="text-align: justify;">The Spring 2024 issue of the Just Cross Stitch Magazine just became available.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhLMnQAevVWrUfpy51aBp71Qzkgm1eBxHKSHX2tYTr_V_wHK1zGX_lQqLE-jvXE8VZLO2Q92yLh_JTJU0x0C4NnKIK03ozHoL91zCl4t3QJsrr8NwNBpPugnSrR7adLkxOsbbN74RspA5cr7mk-Ig1BTblFL6l2EKgjbcvLPfMncooePmISOnVYDjBloa4v" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="824" data-original-width="611" height="595" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhLMnQAevVWrUfpy51aBp71Qzkgm1eBxHKSHX2tYTr_V_wHK1zGX_lQqLE-jvXE8VZLO2Q92yLh_JTJU0x0C4NnKIK03ozHoL91zCl4t3QJsrr8NwNBpPugnSrR7adLkxOsbbN74RspA5cr7mk-Ig1BTblFL6l2EKgjbcvLPfMncooePmISOnVYDjBloa4v=w441-h595" width="441" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">I have had a digital subscription for several years - mostly for the Christmas issue. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Aside from that one issue and the previews in the fall, I haven't been very impressed with the quality of the patterns. My understanding is that the designers are not paid for their work and most of the well-established or popular ones no longer submit their work to this publication. Understandably, artists like to be paid for their work just like anyone else. Now that social media gives folks lots of exposure through their own blogs, FlossTube, Instagram, Etsy, etc., they no longer need to rely on JCS to become known.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">All that being said, I did note a couple of interesting things in the latest issue:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>The back page now has images of all the projects contained in the issue, along with the page numbers. </li><li>There are several very useful pages outlining 'Cross Stitch Basics' with excellent, instructive photos.</li><li>There were a couple of articles about FlossTube (stitching vlogs/channels on YouTube) with QR codes for ease of finding the channels.</li><li>an article on Chantelle Deimling's finishes - lots of ways to finish items other than framing or making a pillow</li><li>a request for readers to submit the URLs of some of their favourite FlossTubers.</li></ul><div>In this era of publications going completely digital, hopefully these changes will help maintain subscriptions for both print and digital formats. I, for one, was quite pleased to see this more modern, updated direction. We are almost a quarter of the way through the 21st Century. Many folks of my demographic (65+) are uncomfortable with digital content and resist keeping up with the times.</div><div><br /></div><div>One magazine I know of that is going completely digital has irked many of the subscribers after the announcement there will be no more print editions. Subscribers threatened to cancel their subscriptions, however, the content is still there. I would venture to guess most of these folks are just venting, making their opinions known, but ultimately will continue to access the content. I know my public library carries many digital magazines which are accessible (and free) to all.</div><div><br /></div><div>Change is difficult for many to embrace, but times are always changing and we need to get <strike>over it</strike> through the stages of loss/grief quickly and get to the acceptance stage and be open to learn new things and technologies. </div><div><br /></div><div>I like routines and familiar things as much as the next person but I find it so interesting to <i>learn</i> new things and how to <i>do</i> new things. Maybe it's the educator in me - always looking to expand my horizons - being a lifelong learner. Regardless, the Internet provides so much opportunity to access so much information and knowledge. Folks who can't or won't take advantage of these opportunities really miss out.</div></div></div><p></p>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-84861100334061282472024-01-11T15:57:00.010-05:002024-01-17T18:25:20.621-05:00Daytime Photos - Still Gloomy Though<p>I got a photo of the Quaker #6 that I started 2 years ago and finished a couple of months ago.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjznNyq_1U_jOtwSxvR49CuSRrhlt5THxBpUDYPd2t3Bj442fe87nGj0fV84scH06ScEmqOShWtFSR9QczlvbUoAUa4r95ZNYTDP84l22-LWX7MSg4uijniepS1tHWY9UJ2q8VkWnYcC1bG3yelioGuFpt0BO08_rrGkQ_q1OC2BEpsxkg_xakGLXDbL5lu/s2908/P1160034.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2757" data-original-width="2908" height="496" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjznNyq_1U_jOtwSxvR49CuSRrhlt5THxBpUDYPd2t3Bj442fe87nGj0fV84scH06ScEmqOShWtFSR9QczlvbUoAUa4r95ZNYTDP84l22-LWX7MSg4uijniepS1tHWY9UJ2q8VkWnYcC1bG3yelioGuFpt0BO08_rrGkQ_q1OC2BEpsxkg_xakGLXDbL5lu/w524-h496/P1160034.JPG" width="524" /></a></div>I got the last square frame at Michaels so will need to get this piece mounted and in the frame along with the others mentioned in the last post. I didn't have either of the green colours and didn't want to do the deer with Kreinik metallic thread so I substituted an antique gold DMC floss and two other greens (DMC 3362 and 3363) as suggested by the <a href="https://www.codyhoover.com/floss-color-tool/">Cody Hoover floss tool</a>. This is my attempt to 'shop from my stash' and I have no trouble making substitutions for floss colours for something small like this ornament. I did have DMC 898 which will be used to outline the tree.<div><br /></div><div>I also picked up my scrappy Excavation blanket that I hadn't touched in a couple of months. This blanket is knit with odd lots of primarily worsted weight acrylic yarn with some wool and even DK weight yarns. I guess I've really got my knitting mojo back. Half of it is done and I'm well into the other half. When it's completed, I'll graft the two halves together. It's to be a blanket for the car. Right now I have my hexagon blanket knit with Noro Silk Garden yarn in there and I don't want it to get dirty or wrecked.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW6UQPs-4JkDEQDBcINGynS9AgAM0r-Q_AtkAUMkvb-v4-U7Bg7CELxg6NQWZ7aKm2PNFOoMsZElkq6pThp1GdlZWL3iC4GmWdq2qNcwvyZHt0p1ggL5hvdeEXYO2fp7pFYUXFzN1QbXn1Qu8rGQLgYSca7b7y43s8J4WcjCJiz51_Jl2FH6ttmsg7QCPc/s3563/P1160969.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3563" data-original-width="2598" height="777" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW6UQPs-4JkDEQDBcINGynS9AgAM0r-Q_AtkAUMkvb-v4-U7Bg7CELxg6NQWZ7aKm2PNFOoMsZElkq6pThp1GdlZWL3iC4GmWdq2qNcwvyZHt0p1ggL5hvdeEXYO2fp7pFYUXFzN1QbXn1Qu8rGQLgYSca7b7y43s8J4WcjCJiz51_Jl2FH6ttmsg7QCPc/w566-h777/P1160969.JPG" width="566" /></a></div>It's too nice to be kicking around in the car.<div><br /></div><div>I tend to do stitching in the daytime at the dining room table. The light is pretty good there and I set up my iPad so I can watch Netflix or YouTube videos or listen to audiobooks while Skip is <strike>hogging</strike> in the family room watching TV during the day. The knitting has been great at night because I can watch TV easier and my eyes don't get as tired.</div><div><br /></div><div>My lunch with Lorna yesterday was very nice. We sat for a couple of hours after we finished eating and got a good gab in. Coincidentally another friend I hadn't seen in ages was having a family lunch two tables over with two of her sisters, their spouses, and her two daughters and one of her grandchildren. Sheila lives even farther east of The Big City than I do. Of all the restaurants in The Big City, what are the odds that we'd both be at the same one at the same time on the same day??? Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket - LOL. </div><div><br /></div><div>Today Skip and I had a good day. I took Skip to a non-hospital appointment and afterwards he suggested getting something to eat with some coffee. We tried Coffee Culture but it was packed so we exited and went to our local Tim Horton's where there were lots of empty tables to choose from. Skip is feeling a lot better since not having cancer treatment since December 12 or cancer-killing drugs pumped into him since mid-November. And when we got home, he didn't automatically pass out on the couch from exhaustion. It's so nice to see these improvements in his energy level and quality of life. </div><div><br /></div><div>He's leery about being out in crowded places in public due to his immune compromised situation so there are still some restrictions that way but he's game for some modest outings - especially since we haven't yet been hit with an Arctic blast or piles of snowfall.</div><div><br /></div><div>We'll take all the positives we can get.<br /><div><br /></div></div>Gerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10339787642984631327noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2322117973728486624.post-4246694192743098882024-01-02T11:05:00.002-05:002024-01-02T11:05:33.194-05:00Progress <p style="text-align: left;">Just a quick post right now. So I frogged it (rip it, rip it) and started again with 3.25mm needles.</p><p>It was going along quite well when I realized the yarn was getting thicker and the fabric was getting denser. You see, my handspun is not the most consistent so one must allow for these anomalies. I liked the look of it but still didn't think there would be enough yarn to finish it properly. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibi5IEDDSEKslNtcW-__vnbdeWiprpQkSjBI2vIv_FRWwpDKa6nuS_nzzra47ZDewe5MVQihUN5Y0zNduHspjCoy4jZmMg95a-6LGCW1bnQ1tUEzymoRgL5rYQkP55-FActctDjx0H0vFM2Xd4_H_vk1e3TWkD5NgG93lOhnUDIz9mwC77uhUuJbHXCJw/s4320/P1130999.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3240" data-original-width="4320" height="503" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibi5IEDDSEKslNtcW-__vnbdeWiprpQkSjBI2vIv_FRWwpDKa6nuS_nzzra47ZDewe5MVQihUN5Y0zNduHspjCoy4jZmMg95a-6LGCW1bnQ1tUEzymoRgL5rYQkP55-FActctDjx0H0vFM2Xd4_H_vk1e3TWkD5NgG93lOhnUDIz9mwC77uhUuJbHXCJw/w670-h503/P1130999.JPG" width="670" /></a></div>This time I didn't frog it. Rather, I started a new one with larger needles and the other end of the ball of yarn. I knit happily away. I'm knitting from one attempt to the other.<p></p><p>At one point I thought I'd try knitting with two circular needles - one for one half and one for the other. I screwed 4mm tips onto a cable and knit half the sts onto it, working both needles for a couple of rounds. Just for curiosity I thought I'd check the size of the first larger needle and saw that it was 4.25mm. Well, gee. I couldn't really continue with the front half of the hat on 4.25mm and the back half on 4mm so I went back to using only the 4.25mm circular needle. The yarn is getting much thinner at this point. I've <strike>been knitting obsessively</strike> done all of this since 10pm last night. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDzKRR5541OyJV12xdmfc9JZYu9b6ChIxsN2Rv08cISyH-l3rfM-dCng3RM9Oa3kKvG5M85FmmNavED0sc6hLVBybSctwmpMMkOX_l4SotxcvK4a5NBcT2j0eoog_SuiP1nKGTqG1Oqfa8T_cVZZiT-4-nIF3HmQCx6cZhQk1OZhNXO5m_eOmCOnX-wg/s4320/P1130998.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4320" data-original-width="3240" height="835" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRDzKRR5541OyJV12xdmfc9JZYu9b6ChIxsN2Rv08cISyH-l3rfM-dCng3RM9Oa3kKvG5M85FmmNavED0sc6hLVBybSctwmpMMkOX_l4SotxcvK4a5NBcT2j0eoog_SuiP1nKGTqG1Oqfa8T_cVZZiT-4-nIF3HmQCx6cZhQk1OZhNXO5m_eOmCOnX-wg/w626-h835/P1130998.JPG" width="626" /></a></div>At this rate, I could be finished tonight and give it a good bath so the yarn will bloom.<p></p><p>It's a strange striped pattern but maybe Skip will want to wear it to keep his head warm.</p><p>I'm going to check out other skeins of my handspun for suitability to make more of these hats.</p><p>I made another HelloFresh meal last night. The Curry Shrimp with Couscous was a success even though I almost burned the couscous by not removing it from the heat right away, No matter, it still turned out great. There were enough leftovers that we had it again for lunch today. It was just as good reheated. People who don't eat leftovers (yes! there are people like that) are really missing out as often the flavours really infuse with reheating.</p><p>We've been watching the Formula 1 documentary on Netflix. Although Skip watches it, I've never really been that interested in F1 racing. However the documentary over 5 seasons really draws one in. I didn't realize how much drama there was. In Skip's impatience, we skipped to the second last season (2021) as a leadup to the last season. I do know that Belgian-Dutch Max Verstappen has won every race this year so am interested to see the earlier parts of the trajectory of his fame.</p><p>We had a nice FaceTime chat with Scooter this morning. He decided to take a few days off from his online teaching (sometimes up to 8 classes per day!!!) until the New Year. He has some fun things planned with his sister and friends so we'll catch up to him in the new year. He's very close to his sister and likes to hang out with her when she's home from university over the holidays. He has plans to visit her in Montréal at the end of January as well as continuing on to Québac City.</p><p>Skip and I decided to not do much in the way of presents for Christmas. The HelloFresh meals were my treat and I have a couple of small things for him for under the tree and for his stocking. Basically we already own everything we want or need. My biggest present is still having him here to spend time with. Not everyone is so fortunate. We've lost so many people over the last couple of years. Aside from impending infirmity, losing friends and family are the worst things about getting older.</p><p>We will be enjoying Christmas dinner tomorrow afternoon at a friend's with her family. We won't even have bad weather to be concerned about. Yes, a light snow is very picturesque for Christmas morning but at this point in my life, I don't need snow in any way, shape or form.</p><p><b><span style="color: #38761d;">Merry</span> <span style="color: red;">Christmas</span></b> to all who read my blog.
